Domain hack is when the domain extension is part of the word that the domain name expresses. Its first example is inter.net which was registered back in 1992. It serves the purpose of generating short domain names. Even a sub domain can be part of a domain hack: as an example del.icio.us.
It was more important before the nTLD era, as most .com domain names were taken and thus the extension became saturated.
