The most popular tools for estimating a website’s traffic are Alexa and SimilarWeb ranks. Studies have shown that the less the Alexa rank, the more exact the estimation. Alexa claims to have a good estimation for websites having better than 1M Alexa rank. More studies have shown that for lower traffic domains the Alexa rank is quite uncertain.
However, domainers often need to analyze domains over 1 million Alexa ranks, and it would be very useful to convert these ranks to traffic estimates as well. In our previous post we have shown that for lower traffic domains there is no correlation between Alexa and SimilarWeb ranks, so now we wanted to examine if SimilarWeb rank above 1M yields useful information on the traffic of a domain. It should be noted that for domains possessing SimilarWeb ranks up to 3-4M there is a traffic information provided, so there is no need for traffic estimation in that range.
We have analyzed 50 domains for which we had exact traffic data and their SimilarWeb rank was compared. SimilarWeb rank and real traffic data well correlated as seen in the Figure below.
Thus, we have determined the exact function that describes the correlation. As seen in the Figure below, the prediction tool was satisfying (R=0.79) even at as low as monthly 1000 traffic.
