Analyzing gTLD Domain Sales from 2022

I previously wrote an article discussing overall domain sales from 2022 and thought I would follow it up with another article that focused specifically on the generic top-level domain sales. At least some of these extensions continue to grow in popularity and we can see that based solely on the number of sales that were reported over the previous two years. According to NameBio, gTLD domain sales almost doubled between 2021, which had a total of 2,591 reported gTLD domain sales for a total of $5.4 million, and 2022 which had a total of 4,725 reported gTLD domain sales for a total of $7.3 million. In this article we’ll try to determine which extensions saw the most growth and which extensions didn’t seem to benefit from all of this growth.

Largest gTLD Domain Sales in 2022

Last year saw almost $2 million dollars more in gTLD sales as compared to the year before. With that in mind, you know there must’ve been some pretty good sales reported. Below is a list of the top 10 gTLD domain sales from 2022.

1. bull.xyz – $199,888
2. sino.xyz – $119,911
3. wrap.xyz – $110,000
4. capital.xyz – $105,000
5. profile.xyz – $104,000
6. sportsbet.xyz – $103,910
7. bolt.xyz – $79,888
8. pixels.xyz – $74,980
9. conduit.xyz – $69,888
9. momentum.xyz – $69,888
10. homepage.xyz – $60,000
10. best.casino – $60,000

If one thing is clear from the data above, it’s that the .XYZ extension dominated the top sales for gTLD’s last year. Also, when you consider that there was only one domain which sold for six figures the year before (eth.club for $200,000) then we can certainly see where some of that additional $2 million in sales came from. In fact, if we dig a little deeper we can see where even more of that additional sales money came from. In 2021, there were a total of eight domains which sold for $50,000 or more (one .CLUB, three .XYZ, one .PARIS, one .WEBSITE, and two .APP domains). In 2022, there were twenty domains which sold for $50,000 or more (nineteen .XYZ and one .CASINO domains). Now it’s looking like the .XYZ extension really knocked it out of the ballpark last year! Let’s take a deeper dive into some of the other new generic top-level domain extensions and see if their sales numbers were better or worse between last year and the year before.

APP – The new .APP extension had a great year in 2022. The extension saw growth in the number of sales reported between last year and the year before. In 2021, the extension reported 116 total domain sales with a value of $400,300 and six domains selling for $10,000 or more. In 2022, the extension reported 218 total domain sales with a value of $436,000 and nine domains selling for $10,000 or more.

CLUB – Not all gTLD domain extensions performed better last year. For instance, the .CLUB extension saw its sales numbers decline. In 2021, the extension reported 212 total domain sales with a value of $729,300 and one domain selling for $100,000 or more. In 2022, the extension reported only 103 total domain sales with a value of $231,800 and no domains selling for more than $18,000.

ART – Some of the new gTLD extensions have also been similar over the previous two years. That’s the case when looking at the .ART extension. In 2021, the extension reported 79 total domain sales with a value of $415,100 and three domains selling for $10,000 or more. In 2022, the extension reported 76 total domain sales with a value of $346,600 and two domains selling for $10,000 or more.

FINANCE – Another gTLD which performed significantly better last year was the .FINANCE extension. In 2021, the extension reported 40 total domain sales with a value of $40,200 and three domains selling for $5,000 or more. In 2022, the extension reported 79 total domain sales with a value of $70,900 and one domain selling for $10,000 or more.

GAMES – The .GAMES extension had one of the best year-over-year increases in this entire list. In 2021, the extension reported 16 total domain sales with a value of $4,669 and zero domains selling for more than $2,010. In 2022, the extension reported 122 total domain sales with a value of $40,200 and one domain selling for $5,000 or more.

WORKS – Although it doesn’t have as many reported sales as the others listed above, the .WORKS extension has definitely improved in the department of growth. In 2021, the extension reported 5 total domain sales with a value of $3,706 and one domain that sold for $1,000 or more. In 2022, the extension reported 30 total domain sales with a value of $12,200 and one domain selling for $5,000 or more.

WORLD – One final new gTLD that did well last year was the .WORLD extension. In 2021, the extension reported 79 total domain sales with a value of $27,800 and two domains that sold for $2,000 or more. In 2022, the extension reported 135 total domain sales with a value of $97,200 and two domains selling for $10,000 or more.

So, there you have it! An in-depth look into the newer gTLD domain sales from last year as compared to the year before. Some extensions, such as .XYZ, saw massive growth from one year to the next. Others, like the .CLUB extension, did not have a great year. Still, if you’re someone investing in the newer generic top-level domains then this data can give you some ideas on which extensions might be worth investing in and which ones might be worth staying away from. Have a safe, happy and profitable new year everyone!
